Terrifying Trio (if you're a monster): Monster Hunter, Armored War-Tiger & Armored Cart

Terrifying Trio (if you're a monster): Monster Hunter, Armored War-Tiger & Armored Cart

Good news for all you Curse of Strahd fans or independent friends of the monster-hunting profession!

This week's Token release again brings three new creatures to the table:

Monster Hunter

"Where particularly unpleasant monstrosities of every kind gather, a counter-reaction inevitably emerges over time. One cannot live in fear forever, and it never takes long before the hunters become the hunted. This never proceeds entirely smoothly, and few of those who take up blade, stake, and poison to march to war against mundane or supernatural terrors practice this profession for long — but those who survive their baptism by fire and the years that follow become grizzled veterans and unshakeable experts in the field of monster hunting, capable of turning the tables at any moment and showing the true terrors why one should fear old people in professions where one normally dies young."

The Monster Hunter is equipped, similar to the Vampire Huntress, with all manner of dirty tricks to go to war against various creatures that typically play unfair. I didn't just limit myself to a "Witcher" knockoff, but tried to give the classic Van Helsing / Van Richten style monster hunter a cool coat of paint, and I think I pulled it off! He definitely plays like a calculating expert and also offers plenty of fertile ground for portraying an overly zealous, dehumanized antagonist if you want to use him as an enemy!

Armored War-Tiger

"When marching to war against the monstrous, the thought naturally arises to make use of one's enemy's own weapons. One takes an apex predator, clads it in heavy armor, and hopes one was successful enough in its training that this war beast is able to distinguish friend from foe. If successful in this, one is rewarded with a raging storm of blade-long claws and bone-shattering bites that can be unleashed to cause serious problems for anything from an ill-tempered troll, a pack of ghouls, or an errant wyvern - it's the ultimate weapon in a monster hunter's arsenal."

If you've been around for a while, you know how I feel about heavily armored creatures (I love them), so something like the War Tiger was of course a ton of fun for me. I tried to keep the creature simple so it can be sent into battle as a trusty partner without too much bookkeeping on your part. But of course I still included a few things that lend the whole thing more variety than just "walk, bite, done," and instead evoke the image of this armored war beast. Of course it doesn't have to be a monster hunter's companion specifically, it could just as easily be the war beast of an up-and-coming orc warchief or something similar.

Armored Cart

"Monster hunters are solitary individuals; they have lost too many friends and allies to place much value on the company of others, and, bizarrely, on account of their craft they are feared and shunned by the common folk about as much as they are revered and thanked. An armored cart serves as the mobile base of a veteran monster hunter, equipped with the necessary workstations to be alchemically active, outfitted with a plethora of tools, weapons, and remedies, both of their own invention and established solutions to monstrous problems, so as to always have a plan B ready for any situation. Reinforced with ward-imbued wood to withstand bubbling acid, consuming fire, or other unnatural sources of damage, the armored cart is a fortress on wheels, and even features a cell in which the intrepid monster hunter can imprison specimens to experiment on the living subject."

Lastly, the armored cart. Here I let myself go a bit wild with tools and trinkets, and I can easily picture handing something like this to my own players. I just love these mobile bases that can also play a role in combat, similar to the Battle-Brewer's Tactical Tavern or M.O.T.H.E.R. Base! I hope you find the cart as cool as I do, and I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to report from your expeditions!
