Finally worth your time: Haruman's Hill

Finally worth your time: Haruman's Hill

Our interpretation of Haruman’s Hill transforms this area into a place with real impact, a great opportunity to make Zariel and her fall tangible and to confront the players with the true horror of a fallen angel and the tragedy’s fallout - rather than a throwaway location that leaves you frustrated and Lulu at the mercy of your players' slowly dwindling patience.

"Midway upon the journey of our life I found myself within a forest dark, For the straightforward pathway had been lost."
The glimpse of an enormous skeleton deeper within.
Tortured damned impaled atop iron trees, swarms of stirges feasting on them.

Haruman's Hill

After the chaotic Wastelands and the kind of kooky Fort Knucklebone, this location grants the perfect opportunity to really drive home that first moment where the characters actually feel like they are in hell, as this place is a hell-vision straight out Dante’s Inferno.

As always, the selection of maps is a toolbox, for you to run in sequence to bring a specific location to life or pick and choose your favourites to include them at any point in your own campaign.

Let's take a detailed look at each map and talk about what makes each of them a great fit for your adventures.

The Path

Map one immediately establishes the visual design and summarizes it in a concise way: corrupted ground, iron trees, the tortured damned, and swarming stirges, all of which is off putting in its own way,  representing both ends of a spectrum that is deliberately hostile to human perception.

Our main inspiration was a series of google streetview images of rural Australia.
There are a lot of scenery shots overlooking the area, conveying the immense scale and hopeless athmosphere.

The Path II

Here becomes clear that it will only get worse the deeper you go.

There's also more space to duke it out with the denizens of this frightful forest.

Organic Matter

Here the path opens into a larger area and the dense treeline makes way for iron spikes. Where the trees could be construed as some form of twisted natural feature, the spikes make it very clear that something is deliberately doing this, the whole thing a visual reference to the shrike - a bird that impales its prey on thorns to store it for later preparation and consumption.

The organic growths beside the path can serve as difficult terrain, while the spikes provide the perfect setup for an encounter.
Keep this imagery in mind, there will be a test later.

Skeleton

We added this location as a cool centerpiece for any session and there are a lot of our creatures who lend themselves to interact with it - be it the lair of a Bone Hag, the hunting grounds of a Rot Cerf or a somber place where giant creatures like Shipbreaker Leviathan return to die, their decaying body nourishing the surrounding ecosystem.

Lava Bridge

Something, something high ground.

Sometimes a fight atop a bone bridge over lava is exactly what you need in a session.

Even without the context of the module, its a pretty gnarly map that you can use for any kind of nightmarish encounter.

Jander's Tree

Crucifixion with a view.

Lore-wise, the path leads to the grand tree from which Jander Sunstar hangs, one of the former Hellriders who did not follow Zariel and Haruman into damnation, now being punished for this betrayal via means of eternal crucifixion.

The map is large enough to allow for an action packed and mobile boss encounter!

Also a battle with a view.

As described in the video, you can use the full Beneos range to breathe life into this somewhat stale bait and switch scenario. To make the encounter with Haruman himself worthwhile, a reimagination called the "Iron Shrike" will be released shortly on Beneos Tokens. He's everything you want from a climatic encounter to fully round up the experience.

More like Narzugone!

This devil named after the eponymous bird that delights in impaling its victims and then feeding on them is a able to conjure and control all kinds of spike- and thorn-laden implements and uses them to bind, puppeteer, and impale his enemies, enriching himself with their souls and their strength.

Should they die in his care, they become Indentured Impaled and must serve him in battle.

Stay tuned for the release alongside a video showcase!

The Shrike will release this week over at Beneos Tokens! But that's not all.

Stirges

As you can tell by now, this place is lousy with Stirges. I went over their statblock and took the liberty to make them a bit more interesting without changing too much regarding their signature gameplay loop.

You've probably spotted some in the trailer and they as well be released soon after to allow you to populate the skies above.

Each creature is designed to meaningfully interact with its environments and their foreshadowing events included within their immersive integration can save you a ton of work for bringing this place to life!

BENEOS SEARCH ENGINE

We have so many battle maps, intros, magic items, tokens, and custom spells that we have our own search engine. It is integrated into the Beneos module for Foundry VTT, but can also be used free of charge online to see everything we have.

If you want to keep the Beneos high going between map releases, consider supporting Beneos Tokens, Spells & Loot! There's a new creature every week, often with a direct connection to the last or the next map release!

Every other week there's a spell or item release and especially loyal supporters even gain access to an additional creature release every month. Like the maps, they are optimized for FoundryVTT and are an essential part of our design philosophy. For example:

New Spells: Blunten the Edge, Dramatic Send-Off, Cloud Oubliette, Hellthorn Brambles
