Adventuring Below Zero: Arctic Landscapes

Adventuring Below Zero: Arctic Landscapes

A ready-to-run biome toolkit that plugs a gaping, snow-shaped hole in our catalogue and enables you to run any number of sessions surrounded by ice without running out of ways to describe it being cold.

The release includes 13 animated battlemaps and their respective sceneries, plus two intro sequences to set the mood!

As always, this pack plugs effortlessly into some releases you already own.

And this one plugs straight into a release you might already own. Remember the Mirror of Mephistar, that twenty-foot slab of ice at the end of the ravine? Have your players step through and this is where they come out: A cold counterbalance to the red glare of the Avernus maps, so a hell campaign doesn't spend every session in the same furnace light. It can be a continuation of the Snow Cave Harbour map pack, a stretch of arctic sea on your voyage via air ship or regular ship or the logical conclusion of a journey northwards through the Stormridge Highlands.

Let's take a detailed look at each map and talk about what makes each of them a great fit for your adventures.

Map 1: Snow Storm

An open snowfield in a storm, howling wind and blinding snow robbing the party of their senses.

The perfect way to introduce the challenges brought forth by this hostile environment. The whole pack really comes to live due to the particle effects and ambience sounds, especially for this barren snow field map...

Map 2: Ice Cliff A

... or these ones, where the ice cracks loudly, the sea surges against the cliffs and chunks of ice break off and tumble into the sea below.

Map 3: Ice Cliff B

There are two ice cliff maps so you can arrive at one and exit from the other without the players getting snippy about it.

Map 4: Ice Floe

One of my (Leon) personal favourites. It's simple but there are a lot of cool encounter possibilities, from the Orca-inspired "surrounded by predators trying to topple the whole thing" to this floe actually being just the flattened top of an ice berg, with creatures within and spilling out over the course of combat.

Map 5: Ice Water

Atmospheric scenery during a long voyage, the perfect stage for an encounter where the players must utilize the floating bits and pieces of ice to maneuver around.

This one makes for a great continuation of a last stand upon the cliffs, leading to a desperate fight to escape out towards the sea and then a a chase over the bits and pieces of floating ice.

Map 6: Snow Field A

As we move moving further inland, there is a selection of iced-over rock, frozen cliffs, snowfields, cracks and crevasses. These are modular maps and sceneries that are perfect to illustrate episodes of travel, survival and exploration.

Map 7: Snow Field B

Mountain ridges covered in frost, a great scenery for an uphill battle, as the players need to ascend towards the platform at the top of the map.

Map 8: Snow Field Camp

campfire. DMs sure love their ambushes, so the campfire can act as a beacon to everything freezing in the dark. Let them settle, let them drop their guard, and let something wander in out of the white toward the one warm thing for miles.

Map 9: Snow Field C

More rock outcrops from another angle, another really cool spot for an ambush from above.

Map 10: Bloody Snow Field

A field of snow, a spread of blood shocking against the white, a trail of red prints leading away. With the Wendigo, the Wintergrim or the Frost Wretches, we have a lot of creatures that you can just insert here for a spontaneous battle or use this grisly scene to kickstart a drawn out, tense narrative playing into the horror aspect of this arctic environment.

Map 11: Glacier Crevasse

A glacier crevasse, an environmental hazard or the start of a descent further below, down towards an ice dragon’s lair or a frost giant tomb encased in ice.

Map 12: Ice Cave Entrance

This cave mouth might offer shelter from the howling storm, it can be a dungeon entrance or a beast’s lair. In any case, its another great point of transition between the outside world and an icy dungeon.

Map 13: Snowy Mountain Pass

And then we have a snowy crossroad section, great for a bit of action between bouts of traveling. Be it an ambush from the high ground, a running fight, or a fork in the path where decisions have to be made. Its also the perfect place for a couple of frost giants to charge a toll.

Beneos Creatures, Spells & Loot Patreons can unleash the might of the Frost Giants upon their players, as the first of the Allfather's children walk the frigid wastes of this release!
