Disgusting Dungeon: Hellwasp Nest

Disgusting Dungeon: Hellwasp Nest

With the fiery background and the trademark chains, some of you will already recognize its use for a hell-based module of your choice. You’re getting a complete vertical dungeon you can run as one continuous crawl with a massive boss fight waiting at the end, where the party will be uncomfortable at any step!

The Hellwasp Nest is a harrowing landmark for any adventurer traversing the infernal wastes.
Climbing the chain and gaining entry via the balcony serves as an atmospheric intro, great environments to convey the mood.
Crawling through the larva-infested tunnels is equally dangerous and just really gross.

Check out the video for the full cinematic intro that you can show to your players!

The sky over the First Layer of Hell bleeds a constant, hazy crimson, but hee, the air vibrates with something far more predatory than a typical devil's ambition.

Make your way from the chained ground approach in a hellish landscape all the way up through four interior layers to the Queen’s lair, and possibly out to the rooftop finale.

Let's take a detailed look at each map and talk about what makes each of them a great fit for your adventures, even beyond the official Adventure.

Map 1 & 2: The Ascent

The journey begins at the Chain Anchor and the organic flesh-balcony. These maps represent the "High Altitude" exterior where players must navigate the narrow paths connecting the infernal wasteland to the hive.

The Chain

Climbing the chain and gaining entry via the balcony serves as an atmospheric intro, great environments to convey the mood.

The Balcony

You could also insert the titanic chain into a dream sequence on the go, a strong metaphorical image!

The whole structure providing a sense of scale and you can use these for an aerial chase to rescue an abducted ally or as a tense approach where hellwasps harass the party as they ascend.

Map 3, 4 & 5: The Inner Hive

These maps represent the three fleshed out internal levels of the nest, shifting the biome from the infernal aesthetic of the outside towards the nightmarish bio-horror look within.

This does not restrict hive to just the depicted areas, you can use handouts or sceneries as depictions of other levels or make use of other releases like the Ankheg Nest to expand the nest while staying true to the visual style.

Level 1

This could just as easily find its place within a rescue mission or as a grueling crawl through an infested structure.

Level 2

You can turn the different organical hazards into a variety of skill challenges - failing to avoid, defuse or navigate pulsating flesh growths or bursting bile-sacks might trigger defense mechanisms like traps or  encounters, guardian creatures are alerted.

The interior is a labyrinth of hardened bile and translucent resin walls where the silhouettes of victims are visible.

Level 3

This area is perfect for a tense stealth sequence where the players need to avoid clusters of larva or wailing victims that could alert the hive creatures to their presence!

Don't forget to grab some loot from the cocoons along the way!

Map 6 & 7: Brood Chamber (Level 4) & Nest Top

The final showdown commences at the hive's peak or within the Queen's Lair.

The Brood Chamber

Nest Top

The top can be used as the grand finale of the dungeon crawl, as you can see in the video, we even included a an animation of the Hellwasp Queen that you can trigger within Foundry, having her emerge from below and crawl up to the top! Its a really special way to connect the two areas.

The top can also be used as an entry point to descend into the dungeon, for example after crashing your precious airship into it!

Beneos Tokens

Hellwasp Queen, a true girlboss

This is the Hellwasp Queen! She is ready to rip into your players, but without the questionable 'save-or-suck' mechanics that often go along with the poison-paralyze-pipeline of the regular Hellwasp - you can check out our video on the hellwasp queen to see how we approached her design!
