Animated Cave Battlemaps for Foundry VTT

Animated cave entrance battlemap for Foundry VTT

Caves are where a lot of tabletop campaigns earn their best moments. Tight corridors, bad sightlines, the slow dread of not knowing what is around the next bend. An animated cave battlemap leans into all of that, because the small movements, dripping water, a glowing vein of crystal, the shimmer of an underground river, keep the space feeling alive even when the party is standing still and arguing about marching order.

What makes a cave map worth using

Not every cave map earns its place. The ones that do tend to share a few traits. The motion is subtle, so it sets a mood without pulling focus from the tokens. The layout has real tactical shape, chokepoints, ledges, a chamber that opens up after a crawl. And the lighting reads clearly, so players can tell at a glance where it is safe to stand and where the dark begins.

Bright, medium, or dark

The same cave can play three completely different ways depending on light. A bright variant suits a crystal grotto or a cavern lit by luminous fungus. A medium variant fits a torchlit camp dug into the rock. A dark variant is the ambush waiting to happen, where vision is the whole encounter. When you choose a cave map, think about which version matches the scene you are about to run, and keep a second brightness on hand for when the torch goes out.

Running a cave encounter in Foundry VTT

A cave is the perfect place to use Foundry vision and lighting properly. Turn on token vision so players only see what their light reaches. Add a few dim light sources, a vein of glowing crystal, a distant lava glow, and let the rest fall into shadow. Wall the corridors so a clever rogue cannot peek through solid rock. The first time a player edges around a corner and the chamber unfolds in front of them, you will understand why caves and animated maps belong together.

Make it a real encounter, not a corridor

The cheapest mistake with cave maps is using them as a hallway between two fights. Give the space something to do. A rope bridge over a chasm changes how a battle flows. A pool of still water hides something, or reflects a light the party has not noticed yet. A narrow ledge forces a choice between speed and safety. The map sets the stage, but the encounter is what the table remembers.

What to look for when you pick one

Aim for a map that is built to a clear grid so token scale just works in Foundry. Prefer files that ship Foundry ready, with walls and lighting already in place, so you spend game night playing rather than tracing edges. And check the loop itself, the motion should be smooth and seamless, with no visible jump where the video restarts.

Common questions

Are animated cave maps harder to run than static ones? No. In Foundry they load the same way, as a video scene background. The only real cost is file size, which a WebM file keeps in check.

What system are these for? Caves are system neutral. They work for D&D, Pathfinder, and most fantasy or sci fi games that use a grid.

How big should a cave map be? Big enough to maneuver, small enough to stay tense. A single chamber with one or two approaches is often more fun than a sprawling maze.

Where to go from here

If you are new to animated maps, start with a single cave you can drop into any session, then build out from there. A cave mouth, a flooded cavern, a crystal grotto, that small set will cover a surprising number of nights at the table.
