Planescape meets Barad-dûr: The Tower of Urm

Planescape meets Barad-dûr: The Tower of Urm

This map pack works as a condensed experience by the book or becomes your playground to construct something truly unique. Whether you're running Avernus as written, a Planescape odyssey, a magitech dungeon crawl, or something that just needs an iron tower crackling with impossible energy - it's all here:

As broadly broached in the official module, this the home of Mordenkainen, a plane-traveling wizard of multiversal renown and the players are meant to meet him here. But as always, we designed the release in a way that you can insert it into your ongoing adventure as you please!

Modular by design

We plan on adding more floors later. But due to the tower's portal structure, you can always insert any beneos map as an extra floor!

Let's take a detailed look at each map and talk about what makes each of them a great fit for your adventures.

Map 1: The Blood Lake

This sanguine sea is probably teeming with all sorts of nastiness, so this map allows you to run an encounter!

Map 2: Bloodied Docks

A dock, perhaps cobbled together by adventurers who came here searching for a dungeon, or even the Bleeding Citadel itself.

Map 3-5: Rocky Hellscapes

Situated directly at the cliff edge, it works well for fights against flying enemies or maybe even a giant creature, rising from the crimson coastline.

A large rift with lava flowing through it, a setup that could appear anywhere in Avernus or any suitably volcanic area, makes for a cool backdrop for a campsite or a combat encounter.

Generic rocky terrain, shrouded in a sulfurous yellowish-red haze, and can be used just as flexibly.

Map 6: Tower Balcony

This is most likely where players will encounter the wizard of the tower. It may not actually happen all that often that players make it inside the tower itself, but at the very least he will speak down to them from the balcony, much like Saruman — and Map 6 is exactly that.

Map 7: Tower Entry Hall

Of course, there is a fireplace and several seating areas, providing a suitably lavish setting to plot and ponder various orbs.

The tower's design is relatively modern and kept in a Planescape aesthetic — it almost looks like a futuristic magipunk tower with touches of Victorian steampunk bleeding through. Ben drew heavily on Planescape's design language and gave it something of that transplanar fantastique, to deliberately set it apart from the classic stone wizard tower, while also making it fit the mordor-esque, sharp-iron aesthetic of Hell.

Map 8: Transplanar Engine

The massive pendulum is keeping the tower from falling out of time as it tears through the planes.

Its in an even triangular in shape, reinforcing the geometry and mathematics of a place built for transplanar travel. Of course, its even more impressive in motion!

Map 9: Tower Chambers

Every item can become a possible macguffin, every statue might come to life!

When accessed without the wizard’s consent or explored upon discovery without the occupant present, it can support a full session of dodging Awakened Armors, Ghostflicker Candelbras and Soulgrasp Mirrors, while evading magical traps and trying to rob the place blind.

Map 10: Tower Top

"Red lightning crackles constantly between two horns of metal on the tower's roof."

Due to the interconnectivity of it all, the players can easily spread out and travel through the tower separately, perhaps having to complete different challenges simultaneously to ensure seamless dimensional transition- adjust the antenna at the peak, while attuning the pendulum and greasing the gears with some sort of otherworldly oil that has to be concocted in the wizards laboratorium!

You can find the stat blocks for the NPCs and enemies mentioned in the video at Beneos “Beneos Tokens, Spells & Items”:

Hellwasps (but cool!)

If you are running DiA, you might be in need for some Hellwasps! We went over the standard Hellwasp to make it a bit more interesting and also added their Queen as a Boss for the Hellwasp Hive map!

Hellwasps are upscaled wasps of monstrous size, who are — to make matters worse — also intelligent. Despite this intelligence they are still wasps, and therefore possessed of a certain baseline hostility toward everything and everyone. By a stroke of luck for the average mortal, they nest almost exclusively in the infernal planes, where they are either used as uneasy alliance partners by the resident fiends or feared as terrors of the skies. At the center of each hellwasp hive resides an enormous queen, the nexus of the telepathic connection between the hive and one of the more unpleasant encounters one can have in the hells — which is saying something.
